Your Comments Needed on Mountain Valley Pipeline – Act by June 22
Your comments needed by June 22! The Mountain Valley Pipeline has applied for a Water Quality Certification from the WV Department of Environmental Protection. This permit is required by Section 401 of the Clean Water Act to ensure that a project can meet water quality standards. The WVDEP has the authority to approve, approve with special conditions, or deny MVP’s application. More

For obvious reasons, the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy strongly opposes allowing this activity on our public lands. More

ALERT! Tell Legislators Not to Cut the Budget for WV DEP Oil and Gas Well Inspectors
The staffing level of the DEP Office of Oil and Gas was cut from 40 to 25 positions last year due to a budget deficit. There is now only 1 oil and gas inspector for every 7000 oil or gas wells and their associated tanks in West Virginia. On top of that, the House of Delegates passed, and the Senate is considering, H.B. 2598 that will drop inspection of 800 oil and gas well tanks by the Division of Water and Waste Management. More

The Water Quality Standards Rule, HB 2382, was quickly thrown onto the Senate Judiciary Committee agenda for Tuesday earlier this week, but was pulled off the agenda due to time constraints. This bill is now on the Judiciary Committee agenda for Monday, March 22 at 3 pm. More

Hi, everyone! We have concluded week 5 at the legislature, and are now past the half-way mark. Next week is the last week that bills can be introduced in the House and Senate. We are keeping a close eye on about 45 bills, many of which have not even made it to committee agendas, which is both good and bad. We saw two very bad bills pass the House this week, but one good bill, SB 404, made it through both chambers and is set to hit the Governor’s desk. More
