In case you missed it, Senator Manchin revealed over the weekend that he is currently a NO on the Build Back Better Act. This is devastating news for West Virginians - this bill is a tremendous opportunity for the Mountain State. The sweeping legislation will provide tax credits to address the climate crisis; extend child tax credits; provide for reductions in health care costs for seniors; provide assistance for child care; and many other provisions to help West Virginians throughout the state. More

Ethylene Oxide: What’s Happened and What’s Next
If you aren't familiar with this issue, according to an air toxins report released by the EPA (NATA), 6 of the 90 census tracts for the highest cancer risks were in the Kanawha Valley. Two plants, located in South Charleston and in Institute, are the big emitters that have contributed to ranking Kanawha County 10th for highest cancer risks in the United States. More

A dangerous bill that exempts oil and gas tanks from the Aboveground Storage Tank Act is making its way through the House of Delegates. A coalition of advocates, including WV Rivers, requested a public hearing to provide citizens the opportunity to make comments on the bill for the official record. House leadership has rejected our request. More

Approximately 300,000 people were ordered to stop bathing in, cleaning with, or drinking the water coming out of their taps. Many became ill and visited emergency rooms. More

Congress must take specific action to help coalfield communities rebound from the economic challenges that existed before COVID-19 and that continue to worsen amidst the pandemic. At the same time, actions to stimulate the economy must have the support of communities directly impacted by abandoned mine sites, including when and whether to start working in the face of COVID-19.
