GREEN, Volume 32 Issue 9
What a wild ride the last 60 days have been! We’ve spent the last two months at the WV State Capitol working hard to help stop the bad environmental bills and help advance the good ones forward. We were successful in defeating several harmful bills and fortunate to see a few good ones cross the finish line before Sine Die. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to read our updates, share our posts on social media, and participate in our action alerts. Your efforts were imperative in helping us accomplish our goals. We couldn’t have done it without your support! More

Call on WV Senate Confirmations Committee to Fully Vet Industry Appointees to Our Regulatory Agencies
In August, Governor Justice appointed the former and current heads of the Coal Association to prominent positions: to the Public Service Commission (PSC) and Public Energy Authority (PEA). The PSC regulates how our electric utilities work, among other things, and the PEA is a formerly-defunct body that has the power to use public money to buy energy infrastructure, including power plants. URGENT: Don’t let a handout to utilities raise your electric bill
House Bill 2959, which is expected to be considered on the House floor Monday and Tuesday, would make it easier for monopoly utilities to raise our electric rates without due process or oversight. These wealthy, out-of-state corporations want to put West Virginians on the hook for expensive energy generation that only the companies can own. Tell your legislators you don’t want higher electric bills and that West Virginians deserve energy freedom. More

WVEC Member Group Profile: Mountain Lakes Preservation Alliance (MLPA)
Mountain Lakes Preservation Alliance was started in 2013 to bring the facts to the public, and local governmental bodies. We described the permanent environmental damage that is occurring due to the construction of these unnecessary pipelines being built on the backs of electric utility ratepayers when the majority of the gas will be exported for corporate profit. Take Action on PPAs
Our lawmakers have a no-cost way to empower more West Virginians to benefit from affordable distributed energy. Current law forbids us from entering into Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to buy energy from renewable or alternative energy resources. Legalizing these agreements will help West Virginia communities, families, businesses, and nonprofits. More

Legislative Wrap-Up
On the 10th day of the legislative session, I remember thinking, “wow, this is going to be a long sixty days.” But, as with anything, time flies when you’re having fun. Today is the last day of the 2nd session of the 83rd West Virginia Legislature, or “sine die.” The environmental bills we’ve been watching have either passed or died and all that’s left is to wait for the crack of the gavel at midnight. WV Senate rejects SB 600
THANK YOU! In another victory for ratepayers, Senate Bill 600 failed to get a majority vote today in Charleston. While the bill was rejected, we know that the utilities are fighting for it and we don’t want to see SB 600 reconsidered today or tomorrow. More

SB 600- Handouts to Industry; Who’s Looking Out for Ratepayers?
SB 600 offers discounted electric rates to industrial users and manufacturers whose rates, like everyone’s, have continued to skyrocket in the past few years. However, someone is going to have to make up the cost of these discounts and, per usual, it’s not going to be the utility shareholders. It’s going to be you and me. More

While this is my first year working for the West Virginia Environmental Council, it’s not my first year walking the halls of the Capitol in support of sound environmental policy. I look forward to digging in on legislation related to: water quality standards, forced pooling, energy issues, and “regulatory reform.” More
