The Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) is having a Mother's Day-themed event called Wild + Wonderful Women of West Virginia. The month of May will determine the fate of the Reconciliation package; therefore May is the time to influence Senator Manchin. About 56% of Senator Manchin’s supporters are women and he would not be in office if it wasn’t for women. More

Summary of April Interims and Special Session Call
Interim meetings began at the Legislature in April. Along with Interims, a special session was called by Governor Justice. The special session call included 17 bills to consider. Some of the bills had been vetoed by Justice for technical reasons, some bills didn't make it through the 2022 regular session. There was one new piece of legislation. More

This year’s bill would have relaxed inspection requirements on oil and gas tanks located within zones of critical concern, which are 5 hours or less upstream of our drinking water intakes. More

WV v EPA Climate Rally
On February 28, the U.S. Supreme Court heard from coal companies and their partisan allies in the case WV v EPA, a lawsuit which aims to gut the Clean Air Act and limit the federal government's ability to address climate change. I traveled to Washington, DC to join climate activists and participate in the Supreme Court Climate Rally Day of Activation Event. 225 advocates gathered to send a message that the EPA’s authority to regulate pollution under the Clean Air Act is a public health necessity and crucial in our fight against climate change. More

SB 694 on Forced Unitization Is OK
Methane gas originates in shale formations laid down eons ago. Over the eons some of it creeps towards the surface and is sometimes trapped on its way upward in a porous and permeable sandstone formation that is topped with a denser cap rock formation above it to keep it from migrating further upward. More

The West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, in partnership with the Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance’s (ABRA), has just released a new project page about the harmful effects of Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs, aka Off-Highway Vehicles/OHVs) on our public lands. It is one of many projects on the Conservation Hub. The new project page contains detailed information on the negative effects to soil, plants, water, air, animals, etc., and also has a statewide interactive map that shows trails on public lands, sensitive habitats, slip potential on different soil types, and stream crossings. More
