There will be a Public Hearing on SB 687 at 8:00am on Monday, April 3, 2017 in the House Chamber. SB 687 would make our narrative water quality the weakest in the nation, and make it easier for the coal industry to get away with poisoning our streams. More

GREEN Vol. 27 Issue 5
Water safety is one of our top priorities during the 2017 WV Legislative Session. In case you missed it, another water bill, HB 2811 was introduced on Tuesday. HB 2811 would add exemptions to the Aboveground Storage Tank Act, passed after the 2014 chemical spill by Freedom Industries into the Elk River that contaminated water for 300,000 in the Kanawha Valley. Stay tuned for more information on actions as we track this bill. More

URGENT ACTION: Public hearing tomorrow on the “cancer creek bill”!
A public hearing on HB 2506 is happening tomorrow at 8:30 am. If passed, HB 2506 would allow more cancer causing toxins to be dumped into our water supply. We need to stand together in force and make our opposition heard! More

Let’s not get caught with our pants down this year!
We all know what has happened these last two years in the West Virginia Legislature: as you worked hard to make our state better, others have worked together to damage our waters, our land, and our rights. This is your best opportunity to stop them. More

Floods show need for more public investment, not less
Like many of my Clay and Kanawha county neighbors, I watched the Elk River rise throughout the day June 23. I was in denial that the river would ever reach into my home. Denial quickly transformed into resignation when I could see the muddy waters coming up through my floor vents. More

What Roger Sherman Learned
On Thursday I had a short conversation with Roger Sherman, lobbyist for the forestry industry. We have known each other for perhaps 15 years and while it’s an adversarial relationship, it’s not hostile, instead it’s professional. We talked about our agendas and I pointed out that the session hadn’t been as bad as we anticipated this year, given the lengthy wish list of the oil and gas industry and the traditional concerns of the coal industry. Bills still standing
As you can see from our bill tracking list, most of the bills we've been following did not make Wednesday's deadline for "crossing over" from their House of origin; and in the majority of cases, this is a good thing. Below are a few words about some of the ones that are still alive. More

Who are they helping?
I had dinner last night with friends in Lexington and the subject of our respective state legislative bodies came up.
