Join the Team: WVEC Is Hiring a Communications Coordinator

The West Virginia Environmental Council (WVEC), a non-profit organization and coalition dedicated to protecting the state’s environment, is seeking a part-time Communications Coordinator to join our team. This is a great opportunity for a creative and motivated individual to use their skills to help advance critical environmental policies in West Virginia.

This work will be part time at approximately 15-20 hours per week during the 2026 legislative session, and 5-10 hours a week leading up to the legislative session. The position is one of independent contractor.

Communication Coordinator’s Responsibilities

Prior to the start of the 2026 Legislative session (November 2025 thru January 14, 2026), the Communications Coordinator will complete onboarding, become familiar with the organization and our priorities, and assist in promoting WVEC’s policy priorities to the public for up to 10 hours a week.

During the 2026 WV State Legislative Session (January 14 – March 14, 2026) the Communications Coordinator will up to 20 hours a week assist the lobby team in sharing WVEC’s positions on legislation. Working in partnership with WVEC’s President, Legislative Oversight Committee (LOC) and the Lobby Team, the Communications Coordinator will develop effective communications strategies, field media requests, draft press releases, create the weekly newsletter, maintain a consistent presence on social media, and provide communications support for WVEC’s annual E-Day and annual meeting.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Write and send out action alerts.
  • Create a weekly newsletter during legislative session and every other month outside of session.
  • Maintain and provide fresh content for WVEC’s Website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts.
  • Keep the WVEC calendar updated. Work with WVEC leadership to coordinate those responsibilities.
  • Assist with community solar, public lands and other legislative, advocacy and organizing efforts.
  • Provide communications and graphics support for WVEC initiatives.
  • Work with WVEC board members as necessary.
  • Plan and provide communications support for 2026 E-Day.
  • Attend coalition partner meetings as schedule allows.
  • Assist with planning and promoting the WVEC annual meeting.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Ideal Communications Coordinator candidates will have knowledge of legislative processes and experience in communications.

Preference will be given to applicants who have a deep knowledge of the legislative process and are familiar with the environmental policies supported (or opposed) by WVEC, or other similar experience.

Part-time compensation starts at $25/hour. This is an independent contractor position.
