You are invited to attend a panel discussion on environmental justice with survivors of the Bhopal India disaster – Bati Bai Rajak, Farhat Jahan, and Rachna Dhingra at West Virginia State University on Monday, September 16, 6:00 – 8:00 pm in the Davis Fine Arts Center Theater, Institute WV. During the night and early morning of December 2 and 3, 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas (MIC) leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, immediately killing at least 3,800 and causing premature death of many thousands more. It is the worst industrial chemical disaster in history. It is hard to believe that this year, 2024, marks the 40th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster. The sister chemical plant of the India facility was located in Institute WV. The Institute plant continued production and storage of MIC for another 28 years, until it was decommissioned in 2012. Please join in us in this moment of solidarity, support, and reflection. |
