Public Hearing on Experimental Underground Mine on Aug. 5

Our friends in Pocahontas and Randolph Counties are organizing to protect their water from a proposed experimental mine. You can support residents through their current action alert.

A NIOSH experimental underground mine is being proposed for the property bordering Silver Creek of Snowshoe Mountain. The facility will create massive underground tunnels that will experience frequent explosions that will be treated with fire suppression chemicals. Aboveground portions of the project would include a fire suppression facility, equipment preparation lots, and water treatment ponds. Learn more about the proposed facility in this video from Snowshoe Mountain. The region of the proposed mine site is known for its karst topography and underground cave systems which allows water to flow underground, putting drinking water resources at risk. Additionally, some of the state’s favorite trout streams, like the Elk, Slaty Fork and Tygart could be impacted.

On August 5, a virtual information meeting will be held by federal agencies developing the experimental mine to discuss the keys changes in the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the facility.
