WVEC Action AlertJune 29 , 2005Below:
Stop the Expansion of NAFTA to Central America (CAFTA). This item forwarded by Mary Wildfire, who says “CAFTA is just like NAFTA, extended on down through Central America. People there have demonstrated against it and been teargassed and harassed—two people were fatally shot in Guatemala trying to stop this thing. It’s particularly important to call if you’re in Capito’s district—you might want to mention the job loss angle as well as the environmental issues.” TAKE ACTION Stop the Expansion of NAFTA to Central America (CAFTA). PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT. Help create trade deals that are, Safe, Clean and Fair! CAFTA could come up for a floor vote in the Senate and House before July 4th Recess. CALL AND E-MAIL YOUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVE TODAY AND TELL THEM TO VOTE NO ON CAFTA! Call: 1-866-340-9281. (It will connect the caller to the Capitol Switchboard. Ask the operator to connect you to the specific Congressional office) The House bill is: HR 3054 and the Senate bill is: S 1307 For e-mail go to: http://mygov.governmentguide.com/mygov/officials/congress/ (this will take a moment to load) and then type in your zip code. Make sure to choose your Senator and then afterwards do your Representative. Text for e-mail: Dear Member of Congress, I urge you to vote "NO" on the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). The NAFTA model should not be expanded. NAFTA has had devastating impacts on people's lives and their environment, here and in Mexico. I want trade agreements that include strong, enforceable environmental provisions, provide incentives for Central American countries to protect what is left of their rainforests and natural resources, and that do not allow foreign corporations to attack our hard-fought environmental and health measures.
