URGENT ACTION NEEDED

TOPIC: Still Trying to Save the Environmental Quality Board (EQB) - not much time!

The Fate of the EQB is in the hands of the HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE.

CONTACT members of House Judiciary Committee immediately!

The fate of the Environmental Quality Board is now in the hands of the House Judiciary Committee. Please contact members of this committee and ask them NOT to eliminate EQB.

These do not have to be your delegates - we need everyone to contact this particular committee immediately.

Members are: Jon Amores - Chair (capitol phone 304 340-3252), Steven Kominar - Vice Chair (304 340-3248), Larry Faircloth, Mike Caputo, Kevin Craig, Bonnie Brown, Joe DeLong, Barbara Fleischauer, Dan Foster, Lidella Hrutkay, Virginia Mahan, James Morgan, Corey Palumbo, Dave Pethtel, John Pino, William Stemple, Rick Thompson, Carrie Webster, Tim Armstead, Ann Calvert, John Ellem, John Overington, Robert Schadler, Jody Smirl and Rusty Webb.

There are two versions of this bill still active (and unacceptable): HB 2717 and SB 724. It is unclear which bill (likely senate version) will be taken up. However, it IS clear that the House Judiciary Committee will be the deciding factor. Both versions propose to eliminate EQB as the agency that sets our water quality standards.

PLEASE NOTE: KEY MESSAGE WHEN YOU CONTACT THESE DELEGATES:

Both legislative houses (Senate and House) have already passed Resolutions this session, during the water quality rule making process, for a YEAR LONG STUDY OF EQB. This is plenty of time to work through any proposals or needed changes to this process.

Citizens are much better served by the Environmental Quality Board Process!

Think about: Who has been Governor in the past? - If EQB is replaced, as proposed, whoever is Governor at the time can appoint all of the persons (except Commissioner of Agriculture) who will decide how clean - or how dirty - our water will be. Do we want to further politicize the setting of our water quality standards?

Questions? Contact Don Garvin: (304) 533-2969

IN ADDITION - FYI ALERT NOTICE: We hope to have a Public Hearing on this issue at the capitol - possibly one day this week. We will let everyone know as soon as we know, and send out another Action Alert. Please attend if at all possible. We will really need as many folks attending as possible. Let our lawmakers know we do not want to eliminate EQB!
