URGENT ACTION NEEDED
TOPIC: All-Terrain Vehicle Legislation Still Headed Down Wrong Road
Senate and House conferees have all but reached final agreement on the ATV bill (HB 4022). They will meet once more tomorrow (Tuesday) to approve very minor last minute changes, most of them technical in nature. The agreed on bill is a fine and long past due safety bill - it requires helmets for children at all times, among other good safety measures.
However, the conference committee version still does not keep ATV's off paved roads without a center line, and there's the rub for those of us who love our "special" places in West Virginia. There is a problem with ATV's running illegally and destructively on our public lands such as the Monongahela National Forest, our national park lands, and our state parks and forests. ATV's don't drop in to these places from thin air - they reach them in large part by using paved roads that are outside the official boundaries of these special places.
Folks, we have lobbied this bill as hard as we could. It is now up to you to let your Delegates and Senators know that the public cares about protecting our public lands. If you feel as we do, that ATV's should be banned on all state roads, then call your legislators and tell them just that: we want an ATV bill that bans their use on paved roads.
