Blackwater Thanksgiving Action Alert!!

The Friends of Blackwater Canyon has launched an intensive campaign to get e-mails, calls, letters and postcards to Governor Wise asking him to protect Blackwater Canyon by putting it in public ownership. Please help us by visiting our new website; www.saveblackwater.org. From our site you can link to the Governor's 'Special Places Website" and nominate the Blackwater Canyon, West Virginia's Crown Jewel, as a special place in need of protection.

Once on the Governor
's site, please add a simple message (like the one show below) in the personal comments section. You can also contact the Governor by calling toll-free 1-888-438-2731 or sending a letter to: Governor Bob Wise, Capitol Building, 1900 Kanawha Blvd., East, Charleston, WV 25305.

Dear Governor Wise,

I would like to nominate Blackwater Canyon as a special place that needs to be preserved and protected for future generations.  Please count my voice among the many who believe Blackwater Canyon is a part of West Virginia
'
s heritage that must not be sacrificed for shortsighted private greed.

                                                         Sincerely,
                                                         Your Name

While online, complete the volunteer form and let us know you
'
re able to help. Even small efforts like volunteering to pass out Blackwater Canyon nomination postcards at local events, malls, club meetings, schools etc. will prove helpful. If you have other ideas, e-mail us at our new address:

info@saveblackwater.org.

You can also use your credit card to donate online to keep this campaign going. Tax-deductible contributions can be mailed to: Friends of Blackwater Canyon, 501 Elizabeth St., Room 3, Charleston WV 25311. Call us for more information at 1-877-WVA-LAND or 304-345-7663.  Thank you for your help!!  Together we can Save Blackwater Canyon for Future Generations.

Judy Rodd, Director, Friends of Blackwater Canyon.

Mid-Atlantic Regional Watershed Roundtable

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Watershed Roundtable, will be held in Doylestown,
Pennsylvania (20 miles north of Philadelphia) on December 3-5, 2001.

This is a great opportunity to share and learn about watershed
initiatives and experiences in the Mid-Atlantic region. I'd also like
to point out that the Environmental Finance Center will be conducting a
workshop all day on Wednesday, December 5, "Financing Watershed
Strategies." We will be exploring both Federal, state, and local public
funding programs and private financing methods which can be the basis of
a financial plan for your watershed initiative.

You may attend the whole Roundtable, or simply attend the Financing
workshop.

Please forward this announcement to those you think might be interested.
Contact me or Russ Johnson at The Heritage Conservancy if you have any
questions.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Clean Air Permit for Panda Energy, Due Dec. 5

The proposed Panda Culloden Power, L.P., power plant has an air
pollution permit out for public comment.  This plant would be the first of a
series of large, fossil-fuel fired power plants that would significantly
increase total air emissions.  Although this plant proposes to use natural
gas, it does not propose any pollution offsets, so air quality in West
Virginia will decline.

Send comments to the West Virginia Department of Environmental
Protection, Division of Air Quality, 7012 MacCorkle Avenue, SE, Charleston,
WV  25304-2943 by Dec. 5 and ask DEP to require emission offsets,
especially for NOx, of this and all future fossil-fuel power plants.

Copies of the draft permit and preliminary engineering determination are
available on the DEP website at:
http://www.dep.state.wv.us/daq/permit/nsr/notice/NSR-notice.html
