Protect Our State Parks and Forests from Casinos, Racetracks, Amusement Parks, ATV Trails
Two bills are moving through the legislature that have similar provisions: to expand and extend the lease terms for private companies to develop and operate facilities and recreational activities for all of our state parks and forests. The bills give the Director of the WV Division of Natural Resources the sole authority to decide what kind of recreational activities and facilities can be developed by private companies on our state public lands, and can set those lease terms for a 50 year period. Senator Beach moves in for the kill
On Tuesday, a bill that would have allowed off-road vehicle use (4x4s) in our state parks and forests, was gutted. Senate Bill 676 would have directed the Division of Natural Resources to develop a comprehensive plan for public roads suitable for off-road recreation as well as creating a fund for off-road vehicle recreation. GREEN, Volume 28 Issue 9
On the 10th day of the legislative session, I remember thinking, “wow, this is going to be a long sixty days.” But, as with anything, time flies when you’re having fun. Today is the last day of the 2nd session of the 83rd West Virginia Legislature, or “sine die.” The environmental bills we’ve been watching have either passed or died and all that’s left is to wait for the crack of the gavel at midnight.
