Summary of April Interims and Special Session Call
Interim meetings began at the Legislature in April. Along with Interims, a special session was called by Governor Justice. The special session call included 17 bills to consider. Some of the bills had been vetoed by Justice for technical reasons, some bills didn't make it through the 2022 regular session. There was one new piece of legislation. More

Our biggest accomplishment during the session was helping defeat HB 2598, the aboveground storage tank bill. This year’s bill would have relaxed inspection requirements on oil and gas tanks located within zones of critical concern, which are 5 hours or less upstream of our drinking water intakes. More

What a wild ride the last 60 days have been! We’ve spent the last two months at the WV State Capitol working hard to help stop the bad environmental bills and help advance the good ones forward. We were successful in defeating several harmful bills and fortunate to see a few good ones cross the finish line before Sine Die. Off-Road Vehicle Recreation on West Virginia Public Lands
The West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, in partnership with the Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance’s (ABRA), has just released a new project page about the harmful effects of Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs, aka Off-Highway Vehicles/OHVs) on our public lands. It is one of many projects on the Conservation Hub. The new project page contains detailed information on the negative effects to soil, plants, water, air, animals, etc., and also has a statewide interactive map that shows trails on public lands, sensitive habitats, slip potential on different soil types, and stream crossings. More

Protect Our State Parks and Forests from Casinos, Racetracks, Amusement Parks, ATV Trails
Two bills are moving through the legislature that have similar provisions: to expand and extend the lease terms for private companies to develop and operate facilities and recreational activities for all of our state parks and forests. The bills give the Director of the WV Division of Natural Resources the sole authority to decide what kind of recreational activities and facilities can be developed by private companies on our state public lands, and can set those lease terms for a 50 year period. More
