This Election is Vital! #GoVoteWV
During the 2020 Legislative Session, E-Council lobbyists helped Julie monitor bills relevant to WVCCE’s work to protect and improve democracy, fair courts, and judicial independence in West Virginia. Right now WVCCE is focused on making sure people are ready to vote in the June 9 primary. If you aren’t already registered to vote, you have until May 19 to do that for this upcoming election. More

Clean Elections: Ten Years Since Citizens United
This past Tuesday marks ten years since the US Supreme Court issued its decision in Citizens United v. the FEC. In the case, the Court ruled that corporations and other outside groups could not be restricted from spending money on elections. This led to the creation and growth of super PACs and the rise of dark money spending, increasing the power of the wealthiest donors and special interests to influence our elections.

A new bill led by Delegate Hansen (D-Monongalia), called the West Virginia Clean Drinking Water Act of 2020, was introduced in the House as HB4542. WV Rivers and the West Virginia Environmental Council endorse this bill which aims to identify and reduce exposure to class of chemical toxins known as polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS. More

So far, we are already tracking SO many bills! Many of the bills are carried over from last year, including two versions of the Power Purchase Agreement bill–the PPA bill we are working on hasn’t been introduced yet! We see a lot of carryover relating to landfills, public lands, and solar. More

For 75 days- including for one week prior to and a week following the end of the recent 60 day regular session of the WV legislature- lobbyists for the WV Environmental Council (WVEC) walked the hallways of the capitol, attended uncounted legislative committee meetings, schemed with lobbyists from allied social justice organizations, encouraged citizens “back home” to contact legislators in support of environmental law sanity- all in an effort to recruit political support for WVEC’s 2019 legislative agenda. More
