As the first full week of the legislative session comes to a close, we here at the Environmental Council have been keeping our eyes on several DEP rules and bills related to water quality.
SB 161 – DEP rule relating to surface mining reclamation
This is part of a DEP rules bundle that passed out of Energy, Industry, and Mining to the Senate Judiciary committee this week. We are working with folks from Appalachian Mountain Advocates to develop a lobby strategy that encompasses their comments on to the proposed rule (with the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, West Virginia Rivers Coalition, the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy, and the West Virginia Sierra Club).
This rule was passed out of the Senate Committee on Energy, Industry, and Mining to Senate Judiciary on the 19th. We see that it’s already on the agenda for Monday’s Senate Judiciary meeting in amended form. We will update you on what the proposed changes mean and what actions, if any, you can take as soon as we are up to speed ourselves.
