March 28: Dolly Sods and the Legacy of Helen McGinnis | 6 p.m. at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge
- Join the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy for a screening of Clara Haizlett’s short documentary Dolly Sods and the Legacy of Helen McGinnis. Decades ago, Dolly Sods was written off as too damaged to protect under the U.S. Forest Service’s “purity doctrine.” With the tireless work of Helen McGinnis and WVHC, the purity doctrine was overturned, and the Eastern Wilderness Act was passed. Dolly Sods became one of West Virginia’s first federally designated Wilderness areas, proving that even lands scarred by logging, fire, and war-era use could be restored and protected for future generations. RSVP HERE.
