Welcome to the first newsletter of the 2024 Legislative session! We have been monitoring legislative activities throughout 2023 and our lobby team is now at the legislature advocating for your environmental and health priorities. Key bills we’re monitoring include protecting net metering, advancing community solar, protecting our drinking water and public lands, and addressing abandoned and orphaned gas wells. You can check out all of our Legislative Priorities below. We are excited to introduce you to this year’s lobby team, which includes veteran Lucia Valentine and new lobby team member Isabel Stellato. We’re thrilled that our communications coordinator, Jillian Welsh, will continue working with WVEC and this incredible team. The session began on Wednesday, January 10. We plan to keep you updated about developments via WVEC’s G.R.E.E.N. newsletter and Action Alerts (subscribe here). We urge you to reach out to your legislators throughout the session. Let them know you expect their support on bills that protect our health and environment. We’re happy to announce WVEC’s new Board Members and Officers. Sandra Fallon is our new President and Linda Frame now serves as the immediate Past President. Sandra has been WVEC’s Vice-President since 2022. She looks forward to building on Linda’s impressive accomplishments by continuing to improve our internal operations, expanding our lobbying efforts, building stronger coalition partnerships and engaging more citizens and students in the legislative process. We all appreciate Linda’s commitment and the expertise she brought to WVEC and are grateful that she’s continuing to work with us as Past President, and our Legislative Chair, managing our lobbying efforts and lobby team. The WVEC Board is pleased to welcome two new members, Quenton King and Francie Price. Quenton was elected WVEC Vice-President in November, bringing a wealth of environmental and policy experience. He currently serves as a Federal Legislative Specialist at Appalachian Voices, chairs the Charleston Green Team, and has worked with the WV Center for Budget and Policy and WV ACLU. Francie is a WVU graduate and an artist passionate about the environment. She paints landscapes that portray our changing climate and is committed to working to protect our planet and future generations. We heartily welcome them to our Board of Directors and look forward to working together. Environmental Day (E-Day) at the WV Legislature, our annual day of citizen advocacy and our most important public event, is February 13. Register below and don’t forget to register for our Advocacy 101 webinar this Tuesday, January 16. A great way to support the 2024 lobby team is to make a donation or renew your WVEC membership. Every dollar counts! We rely on member contributions to support our lobbying efforts; most of our funds are spent to cover lobby team salaries during the session. Please consider donating at our website or sending a check to WVEC, PO Box 1007, Charleston, WV 25324. Be sure to look for the latest legislative news every Friday evening in our newsletter, and follow us for daily updates on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. If you have questions or comments, please contact us at info@wvecouncil.org. Check out the WV Legislature’s website to listen in on what’s happening at the Capitol during House and Senate floor sessions, committee meetings, and public hearings. House and Senate Committee contact information is on our website. We appreciate your support! Click an article title or thumbnail image to read the full article (text below is only an excerpt). |
