Hi {contact.email_greeting}, It’s hard to believe there is less than a month until we bid summer 2026 goodbye. This summer will be remembered for record heat and what felt like near constant flash flooding around the state. Torrential rains ravaged communities around the state, reminding us all of the importance of flood resilience. Environmental policy is so much more than protecting habitats and endangered species.
If the rule is repealed or significantly weakened, it risks more than fragile ecosystems — it threatens water quality by risking pollution to key watersheds. You can learn more about the rule and how to fight back from Mike Jones, conservation manager at West Virginia Rivers Coalition, in this month’s newsletter. Executive Director of WV Rivers, Jennie Smith, also submitted an article this month. Smith’s submission provides key legislative updates from the recent interims in Charleston. For instance, the Roadless Conservation Area Rule protects millions of forested acres around the U.S. Our Monongahela Forest is a recipient of that protection. The federal government is reconsidering the rule, potentially allowing for trucks carrying a variety of things to travel through previously protected land.
