Hi {contact.email_greeting},
Jenna Breeckner is the President of GRWA and an environmental scientist at Greenbrier Environmental Group. She’s contributed an excellent article on some of the endangered species directly related to the well-being of the Greenbrier River watershed. After reading her article, consider visiting GRWA’s website to see how you can support their work. You can also help support the fight against the data center boom in West Virginia by joining us at the West Virginia Citizen Action Group house on June 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. Sometimes resistance looks like making upcycled art with friends after work. Communities over computers forever!
When you leave our screen printing party, you might be hungry for some summer reading. Look no further than our brand new addition to the monthly newsletter: Green Pages! We’ll be sharing book recommendations from our board members and other allies every month. We’re introducing this new section with recommendations from our Vice President, Morgan King. As always, we have a new Member Spotlight — featuring the incomparable Ryan Kirkpatrick of the West Virginia Climate Alliance — a big roundup of news content in Notes and News, and lots of events and opportunities in Happenings Around the Mountain. As a reminder, save the date for the WVEC Annual Retreat at the Blackwater Lodge in Davis, WV, on October 3. Stay tuned for more details on registration, lodging, and our agenda. We hope you enjoy May’s edition of GREEN. Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss any future publications. In the meantime, consider joining an environmental group near you and donating to keep the fight going. The third Friday in May — May 15 this year — is Endangered Species Day. Globally, we take time to recognize endangered wildlife and the importance of conservation. West Virginia is home to more than 20 federally endangered species, some of which have been listed since the 1960s. All over the state, groups like the Greenbrier River Watershed Association work hard to heal and maintain the health of local habitats to protect the well-being of fragile ecosystems in our hills and hollers.
Bring a shirt, bandana, or tote bag to use for screen printing an anti-data center design from Oli Moran of the WVU Sierra Student Club. This event is free, but donations are welcome and will be sent back to Morgantown for their club.
