by Julie Archer, WV Citizens for Clean Elections
As we begin a new year with a new president, we are at a critical juncture that presents both challenges and opportunities in regards to reforms that strengthen our democracy, and protect judicial independence. WV Citizens for Clean Elections remains committed to the work to hold our government accountable to ensure we create a country where everyone can thrive. That’s why we are joining with the Declaration for American Democracy coalition to support the For The People Act (HR 1) and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act (HR 4) to protect and strengthen the sacred right to vote and return the power of our democracy to the people.
To advance bold change in our democracy, we need bold solutions. HR 1 is a once-in-a-generation democracy reform package to clean up our political system, expand and protect voting rights, end gerrymandering, and counter the power of big money in politics. HR 4 would restore and update the full protections of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) — the most effective civil rights legislation in the history of the United States.
On Saturday, we hosted a virtual town hall with the WV NAACP, Our Future WV, and other coalition partners to highlight how these reforms will eliminate challenges to our right to vote, increase access to the ballot and transform our democracy into one that reflects the needs of West Virginia residents and all Americans.
There are many urgent crises that are critical for the new administration to address, and making pro-democracy reforms is critical to seeing rapid progress on the issues West Virginians care most about, from protecting the environment and expanding affordable healthcare, and improving our infrastructure (including access to clean drinking water and reliable broadband), to passing fair labor laws and creating good-paying jobs.

WV Citizens for Clean Elections has a vision for a democracy where everyone participates, every vote is counted, and everyone’s voice is heard. HR 1 can help us get there and we’re counting on you to be a major part of our efforts — fighting for free, fair, and safe elections and a fair and impartial courts.
We can’t do this without you!
