The West Virginia Environmental Council's 
Annual Fall Convention ~September 10 ~12, 2004
The Mountain Institute at Spruce Knob 

Located near Franklin & Circleville (outside of Elkins, WV)

Directions: From I-79, take exit 99 (Route 33 East) at Weston and Buckhannon. Follow Route 33 East through Buckhannon, Elkins, Seneca Rocks, and on to Judy Gap where 33 and 28 split. Continue on 28 south through Circleville (3 miles) and Cherry Grove (3 miles). Turn right on 28/10 toward The Mountain Institute and Spruce Knob Lake (small service sign). Turn left after about 3 miles at a stop sign near a hairpin turn and go another 4 miles to a set of low stone columns and a red farm gate on the right at the top of the hill. Turn right through the gate; marked "The Mountain Institute." Bear left, and follow the dirt road 1 mile until you get to the site. WVEC will also have signs out along the way!

We will accept registrations on site. Lodging is now limited, so plan to tent camp or reserve rooms at one of the nearby hotels we have listed below.

Convention Schedule: 

"Bring along your bike, hiking shoes, bats & balls, Frisbees, etc. There are extraordinary trails, fields, and dirt roads to enjoy during the weekend. This is a beautiful location within the Monongahela National Forest!

Begins Friday, September 10th at 12:00 noon: Early Registration Opens
Attend early & enjoy free time for hiking on your own, bike riding, relaxing, and getting settled in. Early Booth set up (please bring your own tables if possible, as they are limited on site)

Friday, September 10 at 4:00 pm: Regular Registration 
Evening socializing
Silent auction begins (bring some items to contribute!)
Booth set up (please bring your own tables if possible)
Light dinner buffet & refreshments
Live Music in the evening

Saturday, September 11: Registration Continues
Breakfast: 7 am ~ 9:00 am
Announcements and Opening Circle 10:00 am ~ 10:45 am

Con-current Workshops: 11:00 ~ 12:00 noon

  • "Air that is fit to Breathe: Current Threats And Opportunities for Protection." By Jim Kotcon & Wendy Ratcliff

  • Wind Energy - The Controversy over Wind Farms in WV, Frank Young 

  • "Country Roadless? - Forest policies and impacts in the Monongahela National Forest", by Anna Sale ~ WV Sierra Club

  • "C-8 and what this means for WV's water", by Perry McDaniels

  • "A Mine is a terrible thing to Waste", by Fred Sampson WVEC President

  • "The Bottle Bill/Container Law" Where WV stands on recycling aluminum and other containers, By Linda Mallet, WV-Citizen Action Group

Lunch: 12:00 ~ 1:00 (Please pack/provide your own lunch - snacks and drinks will be available)

Half (˝) Day Excursions: Fee of $5. (Paid at Convention) 1:15 ~ approx. 6:00 pm. 
Your choice of:

  • Caving at the Sinks of Gandy for Beginners, Intermediates or Advanced ~ please bring appropriate shoes and clothing & be prepared to get wet and muddy!

  • Stream Study Walk (Light hiking)

  • Hike to Spruce Knob: 2 - 2 ˝ miles over rough terrain

  • Explore a Fossil Bed - (light hiking)

  • Youth Hike - Locate and Identify Salamanders and other creatures

3:00 pm: "The Wilderness Campaign" - A presentation by Matt Keller, Coordinator for the Wilderness Campaign 

Potluck Dinner: 6:30 ~ 7:45 (bring your favorite dish to share!)

Keynote Address: 8:00 ~ 8:45  "Water Quantity Issues - Today and Tomorrow"
Keynote Speaker: Richard T. Eades, Watershed Educator with the Canaan Valley Institute. Rick will be giving an educational presentation on 'Water Quantity' with examples of issues of concern for West Virginia. 

  • Youth Workshop: 8:00 ~ 9:00, with Mike Forman
    "BUGS!" Nighttime bug Walk for children (no additional fee)

Silent Auction ends at approx. 9:30 pm
Music and gathering around the campfire far into the night…. Don't forget to bring those instruments!


Sunday, September 12th:
Breakfast: 7:00 till 9:00
Morning Non-denominational Service: 9:15
Regional Meetings: 10:00 ~ 10:30
Setting WVEC's Legislative Agenda: 10:45 ~ 11:30
Lunch: 12:00 ~ 1:00 (Please provide/pack your own - snacks & drinks available)

Convention Concludes at 1:00 pm. ~ (WVEC Board of Directors Meeting: 1:30 - 3:00 p.m.)

Registration Fee: $ 10.00 per person (Children 12 and under free)
Bunk beds: $ 10.00 per night per person (first come first serve ~ please bring linens, pillows)
Camping: $ 10.00 per night, per tent (unlimited camping sites available!)

  • Note: The Nature Excursions are at an additional cost of $5.00 per person, as the trained staff of The Mountain Institute will be leading these outings. The fee is to be paid during the Convention. Thank you.
